We serviced thousands of generators. In the course of this work, we have encountered many installation mistakes. Some are minor- however, many are serious. These mistakes can cause damage to the generator, void the generator warranty, and be unsafe to the point of being a danger to your family and property. If this occurs, we will not work on the generator and the manufacture will not cover the cost of the warranty work.
You make a significant investment when you decide to purchase and install an automatic home standby generator. It should be installed RIGHT.
The following is a list of the most common mistakes made by inexperienced generator installers:
- Too close to windows, doors, or opening (It should be 5 feet away from any opening into a home)
- Closer than 18" to the house (Generators need to be 5 feet from a home or deck that can catch fire, otherwise it has be tested that it will not spread a fire)
- Less than 3' from A/C units
- Not level
- Not on a proper pad
- No gas or propane line flex hose at the generator
- No gas or propane line sediment trap at the generator
- No gas or propane line pressure test port at the generator
- Generator is fenced in too tight and restricting air flow or work space
- Gas line is too small restricting gas flow or gas pressure to the generator
- Batteries connected the wrong way causing the control board to blow up
- Plants/trees are less than 3' away from the generator, or more for some generators (Creates a fire hazard and difficult working conditions)
